Drug Testing: Students

What are your feelings on drug testing students? Do you feel as though the policy of testing only athletes is adequate? What are your feelings and which changes do you feel are necessary?

  1. I do not feel as if it is the schools responsibility to drug test students. If there seems to be a drug problem with a student then other policies are set to govern those situations. Drug testing athletes is a touchy subject and once again I do not feel a random or mandatory drug screening is appropriate. If there is an issue with an athlete then I would leave it up to VHSL to handle and go forth with their recommendation. I feel that drug testing the students is pushing the boundaries and that responsiblility should be left up to the parents.

  2. As Zack said, I do not think it is the school's responsibility to randomly drug test students. Now as for athletes, I feel there are different circumstances. I am not saying there needs to be random drug testing in athletics, but steroids should be monitored. For instance, If a coach suspects he has an athlete that is using steroids, it should be encouraged they address the situation with the child's parents. Now to some parents this may be insulting, but we are there to protect the kids. It would need to be approached in a very respectful manor and not accusing them, but showing concern for their child. Hopefully this would keep from stirring problems.
